Diabetes Body Image Acceptance Over 50

Why I’ll Never Be an Hourglass (And That’s Perfectly Okay)

Accepting your body doesn’t mean giving up.
It means honoring your blueprint—and
choosing to live well inside it.

Women, Let’s Get Real

Ladies, did you know there are eight different female body types?

I used to think I was an apple—you know, that lovely shape with more weight around the midsection than the hips or thighs. As I got older, I started noticing the same body pattern in my female relatives. And of course, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🍎

But one day, I stumbled upon a body shape guide and learned something surprising…
I’m not an apple.
I’m an
oval.

Oval. Ovoid. Egg-like.
Wider in the middle.
That’s me!

I Am an Oval—and I Dress Like One, Too

As I read the description of the oval body type, I was amazed—99% of it was spot-on.

Even better?
The advice on how to dress for my shape matched exactly how I already dress.
Turns out, my instincts have been right all along. (Score one for Coach Diane!)

You Can’t Shape-Shift Your Genetics

Sure, I can change:

  • My hair color

  • My hairstyle

  • Even my eye color with contacts

But I can’t rewrite my genetic blueprint.
I can’t morph into an hourglass. And neither can you.

And that brings me to my main message:

No matter what you change on the outside, you are still you.
And that’s not something to hide. That’s something to work with.

Remodel, Don’t Reinvent

Think of your body like a kitchen remodel. You work with the existing footprint, assess what’s feasible to change, and honor what makes it function well.

But here’s the catch: You need a realistic view of what you’re working with.

Too many women fall into the trap of distorted body image. And when that happens, no amount of weight loss, surgery, or new clothes will ever feel like enough.

That’s why it helps to have one person in your life who can give you a loving but honest opinion. But if you ask for it—be ready to receive it! (That’s not a challenge for the faint of heart.)

The Real Goal

I may never be an hourglass. But I can become a stronger, healthier, more toned version of me—a fitter oval with more energy and confidence.

That’s the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow:
Progress, not perfection. Presence, not performance.

And a Note to the Gentlemen...

If you’re buying clothing for the woman you love, please—and I say this with love—buy something that suits her actual shape. Not the shape you wish she had. Nothing feels worse than clothing that doesn’t fit, physically or emotionally.

The same goes for jewelry, by the way. 😉
